History

The early 1900's found the River Lynher hosting a very productive stone quarrying era. The land was owned by the Lord of The Manor, who additionally farmed the surrounding hills. At it's height, up to 300 men were employed in the quarrys, providing the material that would eventually be transported by road and river, to the wider UK and mainland Europe. The majority of the material was transported from the old quay (Where we now have the slip), to river barges, which then transferred the spoils to ocean going vessels anchored in The Sound. The quarrying became uneconomical in the early 1970's and the yard gate was closed.
